It’s really interesting to observe how people spend their money here. In all the varying degrees of poverty I’ve seen, some things seem to be universal. Every house has a TV and most likely a stereo system(Although, I’ve been to some houses that have neither). And then everyone seems to have a few pesos(cordobas) every day for the kids to eat small (and unhealthy) snacks, but money to travel to the health center(10 cords is the max for people in my municipality) is hard to come by. People rarely travel outside their department, for example people in Yalaguina might make it to Ocotal or Esteli. But people always seem to have money for new shoes and fancy cell phones.
I also have to say what you may have heard about Latin culture. Anytime I’ve been at someone’s house, even the poorest people out in the campo(rural communities), I’m always offered a cup of coffee or some other type of drink, maybe even with some bread. People truly are generous with the little that they have.
~Also remember that these are just my observations . Not necessarily the reality~
(this is a picture I took in the campo, or rural area. Some plastic chairs and a hammock were the only other furniture in the room)
