Feria de Amor y Amistad

On Feb 14 we celebrated el Dia de Amor y Amistad, aka Valentine’s Day! Same here as there. I decided to do a fair about Sexual Health in Yalaguina’s urban area. I planned it with two health promoters of Yalaguina. This organization called Movimiento Comunal de Nicaragua brought the sound system and a couple other volunteers showed up to help.

At the fair we did a couple dinamicas to review people’s knowledge of HIV, and the health promoters did a lot of questions. As I’ve mentioned before pena or embarrassment/shame is a huge issue here, so even if people knew the response, they wouldn’t go up. So I went up to individuals and asked the question. If they knew it, I told them so and we walked up to the microphone together.

The turnout wasn’t big, but I’m trying to look at the small victories…. Getting a group of teen boys to participate and watching them enjoy it, encouraging some women to come participate, helping a teen girl learn how to put on a condom, and having one person do an HIV test(better than none right?).

And I have to give a big thanks to those of you that donated coloring books, crayons, and toys. They were great prizes at the fair and were very much appreciated. Thank you so much!!
